The PAUL CELAN Fellowship 2012/2013 for translators
The program supports translations from Eastern to Western, Western to Eastern, or between two Eastern European langugages of canonical texts as well as contemporary key works in the Humanities, Social Sciences and Cultural Studies.
Special Emphasis is put on translations of relevant works written by East European authors and/or by female scholars.
Deadline for application: March 25, 2012

The ECML invites submissions for its fourth medium-term programme (2012-2015)
The European Centre for Modern Languages (ECML) of the Council of Europe is very pleased to announce that a new issue of the European Language Gazette is now online: http://wwwecml.at/Portals/1/gazette/gazette-17-E.htm
The projects of the current ECML programme (2008-2011) will come to an end in autumn 2011. An international conference will be organised from 29 September to 1 October 2011 on this occasion to promote the results of the projects in this programme as well as presenting the future orientations of the Centre’s work.
This special issue of the Gazette reveals the general orientation of the future work of the ECML and is dedicated to the Call for submissions for the Centre’s next medium-term programme of activities 2012-2015.

Registration is now open for TM-Europe 2009 www.tm-europe.org which will take place on 1-2 October 2009 in the Marriott Hotel, Warsaw, Poland.
Early bird registration ends on August 17th.
The conference will traditionally focus on management issues for the translation and localisation industry.
The theme of TM-Europe 2009 is “Quality and Terminology Management, and Business Terms and Conditions for Translation and Localisation Services”.
Among the speakers will be representatives from Oracle, SAP, the European Parliament, Lingualinx, Comsys, and others. The conference will include presentations and panel discussions relating to quality management, terminology management and other translation management topics, as well as workshops on translation technology and sales.
The Warsaw Pact debate will focus on the business relationship between customers and vendors and will be webcast on the Internet. MultiLingual Magazine is the Official Media Patron of TM-Europe 2009.

Translation Workshop: German and English - Translation House Looren (Switzerland)

We invite translators from German to English and English to German to apply for our third translators’ workshop, which will provide the opportunity for twelve translators (six German-English and six English-German) to present and discuss their translations-in-progress. We will spend five days working in depth on the submitted texts to scrutinize problematic passages and hone our translations. Many translators have found it invaluable to work with colleagues on concrete textual issues sentence by sentence and word by word, in a constructive environment.
We also anticipate the formation of lasting collegial bonds between professional literary translators in English speaking and German-speaking countries.
Workshop leaders: Karen Nölle (D-Niederkleveez) and Shelley Frisch (USA-Princeton)
Participants: Translators of prose fiction, nonfiction, essays, and poetry who have published at least two book length translations or the equivalent.
Cost: A fee of 150 Euros to cover the workshop and room and board. Financial support from the German Translation Fund will enable us to reimburse participants for a portion of their travel costs.
Arrival: Monday, November 10, evening.
Departure: Saturday, November 15, around noon.
Participants may also inquire about extending their visit to Looren by arriving in advance of the workshop or staying on after it ends.
Application deadline: September 15, 2008.
Applications are considered complete when all materials have arrived.
Submitted texts should be excerpted from a translation-in-progress, or at least from a translation that is not yet in print.
Admitted applicants will be informed of their acceptance by October 1, 2008.

IATE proxy failure

Dear IATE users,
Unfortunately the IATE site has encountered a few problems in the last couple of days. These problems appeared after an update of the IATE servers during Easter weekend.
The typical error message users receive after launching a query looks like this:
"The proxy was unable to fulfill your request because the computer does not appear to be functioning properly. While attempting to communicate with the server, the proxy encountered the following error: HTTP7766: error reading response header (Connection reset by peer) .........." Read More...

One key factor for the success of the new version is the extended support for Microsoft.NET, now including Framework 2.0; customer demand for this feature has been enormous.
